Q

In sexual reproduction , what do the mother and father produce?

A
  • Gametes by meiosis
Each gametes contains 23 chromosomes - half the number of chromosomes in a normal cell
The egg and sperm cell then fuse together to form a cell with the full number of chromosomes.

Q

Sexual reproduction definition

A
  • Involves the fusion of male and female gametes. Because there are two parents = the offspring contain a mixture of their parents genes
  • This is why offspring inherit features from both parents - receives a mixture of chromosomes from mom and dad

Q

What does the mixture of genetic information produce?

A
  • Variation in the offspring
Flowering plants can reproduce in this way too they have egg cells but the sperm is known as pollen

Q

Define asexual reproduction

A

There’s one parent who is genetically identical to offspring. There’s no fusion of gametes, no mixing of chromosomes and no genetic variation between parent and offspring.
