Maintaining ecosystems and biodiversity Flashcards
Its important that biodiversity is maintained at a high enough level to make sure ecosystem is stable. In some areas, programmes have been set up by concerned citizens and scientists to minimise damage by human activity.
Examples of some of these programmes
1) Breeding programme = help prevent endangered species from becoming extinct , Animal bred in captivity - assure survival - released into wild to boost population
2) programmes to protect, regenerate rare habitats like coral reefs, mangroves. In turn protects species living there = preserving ecosystem and biodiversity
More examples of some of these programmes
3) reintroduce hedgerows and field margins around fields on farms where only a single type of crop is grown -> provide habitat for a wider variety of organisms that could survive in a single crop habitat
4) regulations and programmes to reduce level of deforestation taking place and amount of c02 released into atmosphere by businesses = reduce increase of global warming
encourage recycling waste that gets dumped in landfills = reduce amount of land taken over , leaving ecosystems in place
conflicting pressures of maintenance
1) costs money - for things like keep watch if regulations and programmes are followed . Conflict between protecting biodiversity and money as money can be priority for other things
2|) cost of local peoples livelihood example reducing deforesters - > risk of unemployment -> affect local economy if people move away with family to find work
3) conflict with protecting food security, certain organisms are seen as pests for farmers so killed to protect land and more food production -> food chain and biodiversity can be affected
4) development is important but can affect the environment, land in high demand that sometimes untouched land with high biodiversity used for development
