Classification Flashcards
Who was the original classification system created by?
What did it propose and what was the system ?
Carl Linnaeus = Linnaean system
Grouped living things according there characteristic and structure
Kingdom
Phylum
class
order
family
genus
species King Phillip came over for good soup
Why have scientists put forward new models of classification ?
As knowledge of biochemical processes that take place in inside organisms have developed and microscopes improved
What was the new model of classification, who created it and why ?
3 - domain system - created by Carl Woese
Evidence gathered from new chemical analyse techniques such as RNA sequence analysis , he found that species traditionally thought to be closely related are not as closely related as we thought
In the three domain system, what are the 3 domains ?
1) Archaea - organisms in this domain are primitive bacteria- found in extreme places ( hot springs, salt lakes )
2) Bacteria - contains true bacteria like E. coli. Look similar to archaea but lots of biochemical differences between both
3) Eukaryota - broad range of organisms including fungi. plants, animals and protists.
Dear King Phillip came over for good soup
How are organisms named and why are they named like that ??
Using a binomial system = two part Latin name
1) genus = information about organisms ancestry 2) species
Humans = Homo sapiens
2) binomial system used worldwide so scientists in diff countries or with diff languages refer to same name - avoiding confusion
What do evolutionary trees show ?
How scientists think different species are related to each other
They show common ancestor, The more recent an ancestor = the more related the two species = more characteristics they potentially share
What data do scientists use for living organisms and extinct species ?
1) current classification data
2) fossil record
