Competition Flashcards
Define habitat
Define population
habitat = The place where an organism lives
population = all the organisms of one species living in a habitat
Define community
Define Abiotic factors
Community = the population of different species living in a habitat
Abiotic factors = non-living factors on the environment
Define biotic factors
Define ecosystem
Biotic factors : living factors of the environment , e.g food
Ecosystem: The interaction of a community of living organisms (biotic) with non-living ( abiotic ) parts of the environment
What do organisms need in order to survive and why?
Who do they compete with ?
1) Things from the environment and from other organisms
- Plants need water, space , mineral ions , light
- Animals need territory, food, water, mates
2) In order to survive and reproduce
3) with other species for the same resource
What is interdependence ?
In a community, each species depends on other species for things such as food, shelter, pollination and seed dispersal
- The interdependence of all living things in a ecosystem means that any major chances to the ecosystem can have far reaching effects
What is a stable community ?
In some communities, all species and environmental factors are in balance so population size are roughly constant
e.g. rainforests or ancient oak woodlands
