RENAL OSTEODYSTROPHY Flashcards
What is renal osteodystrophy?
o Bone disease in patients with chronic renal insufficiency
o Combines features of rickets, osteomalacia, 2ndary HPT, & osteoporosis.
Children with Renal osteodystrophy have _____?
adults have _____?
rickets
2ndary HPT
Describe the etiology of Renal Osteodystrophy?
o Patient has 2ndary HPT with ↓ glomerular filtration
o Causes retention of nitrogenous wastes, creatinine, & inability to filter PO-4
o Leads to ↑ serum PO-4 which will ↓ serum Ca++.
o ↓ ionized Ca++ stimulates PTH, BUT is not efective since nothing is filtering through glomerulus
What are the basic radiographic features of 1° HPT? 2° HPT?
Localized intraosseous accumulations of fibrous tissue & giant cells.
Can heal –via sclerosis*
Both will see = Bone resorption, laxity of tendons, ligaments, etc. (occur in hands then feet)
Primary = Brown tumors (Osteoclastoma)
Secondary =
Osteosclerosis,
“Salt & Pepper” manifestations in skull
Rugger jersey spine
*brown tumors
What is the radiographical hallmark of Hyperparathyroidism?
Subperiosteal bone resorption
Radiographic Features of HPT are?
bone resorption, subperiosteal is key
acrolysis
acropachy
