RADIOGRAPHY OF RICKETS Flashcards
(T/F) Anyone with rickets, by definition will have osteomalacia?
true
(T/F) In the absence of Vitamin D, you can still make cartilage but it can’t calcify it.
True, The cartilage proliferates but the physeal area can’t calcify. Leads to physis widening, irregular contour.
Periphery of epiphysis is the histologic analogue of zone of?
provisional calcification.
How are rickets & osteomalacia similar?
How different?
Similar = most common finding in both is osteoporosis.
Diferent = Rickets disturbs skeletal growth (growth plates) (unlike osteomalacia)
Findings most prominent in areas of rapid bone growth.
What are the radiographic features of Rickets?
Malacic bowing
Widening physeal cartilage (clinically palpable)
Lucent zone of provisional calcification
Frayed metaphyses & epiphyses
Metaphyseal cupping/splaying
Patient x-rays show femoral metaphysic has frayed appearance with upping of the physis.
What do they have?
Rickets!
(T/F) Pseudofracture is uncommon in rickets.
True
Which of the following will you NOT find psuedofractures?
Paget’s disease, Rickets, Fibrous dysplasia, Osteomalacia
