Renal Anatomy and Canine Rectal Anatomy Flashcards
What is the kidney at birth??
Pronephros
What is the “end kidney”?
Metanephros
What is the kidney between birth and the “end kidney”?
Mesonephros
What is the basic functional unit of the kidney?
Nephron
What is a lobe of the kidney made of?
Cortex (glomeruli and convoluted tubules)
Medullary (loopd of Henle, collecting ducts, and papillary ducts)
What is each lobe of the kidney called?
Renal pyramid
What is the apex of the renal pyramid?
Papilla
What is a calyx?
It is what collects urine form the renal pyramids (more specifically the papilla)
What is fused to the papilla? What do they do?
Urothelial cells
They are little holes that allow the urine to drip into the calyx
What is the renal pelvis?
Urinary epithelium that wraps around the renal crest to form the cavity
What is the renal hilus?
Where vessels and the ureter exit/enter the jidney
What is the renal sinus?
An extra space around the vessels where there is no renal parenchyma, but there is fat
In a pig, what forms the renal pelvis?
2 major calyces
Where does the coccygeus muscle attach?
To the tail vertebrae and runs down to the pelvis
Where does the levator ani attach?
To the ventral processes of caudal veterbrae
