Equine Hindlimb Flashcards
Where do the patellar ligaments insert?
Tibial tuberosity
What makes up the common calcaneal tendon?
Gastrocnemius Superficial digital flexor Biceps femoris Semitendinosus Gracilis (dog)/ Soleus(horse)
What makes up the reciprocal apparatus?
Superficial digital flexor
Fibularis tertius
What happens due to the reciprocal apparatus?
When stifle extends, hock extends
When stifle flexes, hock flexes
Keeps the hindlimb locked extension when patella locks above the medial trochlear ridge
What makes up the stay apparatus?
Patellar ligaments SDF tendon DDF tendon Accessory ligament (distal check) Suspensory ligament Long digital extensor tendon Extensor branch of suspensory ligament
What structure crosses over the sustentaculum tali?
Lateral head of the DDF tendon
Where is the origin of the SDF?
Supracondylar fossa
What part of the reciprocal apparatus originates at the supracondylar fossa?
SDF
Where does the ligament of the head of the femur attach?
Fovea capitis femoris
What is the main source of contraction?
Quadriceps femoris
What happens when the quadriceps femoris contract?
It pulls the patella proximally along with the tibial tuberosity proximally. That causes the tibia to rotate and extend the stifle joint
What does it mean if the stifle is flexed and the hock is extended?
Fibularis tertius is broken
Why is it not a big deal if the fibularis tertius is broken?
There is no tension on it when the horse is bearing weight on it
Why is breaking the SDF a big deal?
SDF pulls apart as the horse puts weight on it an never heals
What does the patella do that would prevent the stifle from flexing?
It is locked over the trochlear tubercle
