What does Wilson state?
In Britain there has been a decline in religion:
- in 2010 only 6% of people attend Church compared to 40% in 1851
- ceremonies such as wedding and baptisms are dropping, only 32% of weddings take place in Church
What did the 2011 Census reveal about religion?
- No. of those saying they are christian dropped from 72% to 59%
- No. of those claiming no religion increased from 15% to 25%
What churches do have increasing membership?
Jehovah Witnesses, Pentecostalism, Muslim and Sikhism
In what countries does Church attendance remain important?
E.g. Ireland 70% attend and America 40%
How does this relate to NRMs and NAMs?
Ignores the growth of some of these and only focuses on the decline of churches
What is the sacred self?
People can be religious and not attend church
What does David Martin question about the ‘golden age of religion’?
Suggest this was never the case and people may have gone to church in the past to look respectable rather than because they were religious
