When there are lots to choose from because consumers can find one that suits their needs
What is a religious monopoly?
One Church with no competition - leads to decline. No incentive for the church to provide people with what they want.

That religion thrives in the US because there has never been a religious monopoly there. Has always been a great variety of denominations to choose from - encouraged growth of a healthy religious market.
What is the religious situation in Europe?
Most countries have been dominated by an official state church which has held a monopoly such as C of E. Competition held back and lack of choice has led to a decline.

The supply of religion as participation increases when there is an ample supply of religious groups to choose from. Decline of religion is not a universal trend happening in all societies

Followers are expressing their Americanism rather than their religiosity.
