What does Wilson suggest to support secularisation?
- That religious organisations have seen a decline in there power, wealth, influence and prestige.
- Churches have had a decline in political role of the church especially in areas such as education and social welfare.
- These roles have now been taken over by more secular parts of the government

That the Church and State are more separate - the church disagrees with the government
What is socialisation?
Church used to be the centre of the community but is now not as involved

meeting individual needs and ‘hatching, matching and dispatching’

That structural differentiation has led to religion becoming increasingly specialised and carrying out fewer functions as society became industrialised
What does Martin suggest to go against secularisation?
The church may have been corrupt in the past in its influence. Today is has more influence on spiritual matters so not necessarily a decline in influence

- Catholic church still influences people e.g. over contraception
- No. of faith schools has increased
