What is the difference, in terms of social control, between smaller and larger societies?
Smaller: still have a sense of community = rely more on informal social control
Larger: perhaps have lost their sense of community = rely more on formal social control
What do Hirschi and Durkheim both believe?
That social order is based on shared values and socialisation
How is control theory different to all other theories?
It asks my most people do NOT commit crime
Why does Hirschi suggest we are all capable of committing crime?
Because we all suffer weaknesses which may cause as to commit crime
What are the 4 social bonds Hirschi identifies which pull people away from crime and persuade them to conform to societies rules?
1) Belief
2) Attachment
3) Commitment
4) Involvement
Explain the belief social bond
People share moral beliefs e.g. respect for the rights of others
Explain the attachment social bond
People have a stake in conformity and don’t want to risk for example, getting the sack or not being able to feed their families
Explain the commitment social bond
People are sensitive to and interested in the wishes of others like family, friends and those I’m their local community
Explain the involvement social bond
People are involved and kept busy with sports teams, school activities, religious groups; they have no time opportunity for crime
