rehabilitation of injuries Flashcards

1
Q

what are the three stages of rehabilitation?

A

early stage- gentle exercises to encourage healing
mid stage- progressive overloading of the area to increase strength
late stage- functional exercises and drills to enable player to return to full time training

Q

how does a massage help with rehabilitation of injury?

A

-deep muscle therapy used to realign damaged muscle fibres and remove toxins from effected areas
-nutrients can be flushed through the damage tissue to aid recovery
-muscle fibre stretched to release tension
-scar tissues get broken down and removed from area
-pain is reduced

Q

how does cold therapy help with rehabilitation of injury? and when is it best used

A

use of ice and ice baths reduces tissue temperature and metabolic activity and reduce blood flow from vasoconstriction of blood vessels
used on acute injuries early in the recovery process

Q

how does heat therapy help with rehabilitation of injury and when is it best used?

A

use of heat pads, reduce muscle tension and increase blood flow from vasodilation of blood vessels
used on chronic or latter stages of acute injuries

Q

what is contrast therapy?

A

alternate cold and heat therapy
use cold water then immediately followed by hot water ratio 1:3 or 1:4 minutes

Q

what are the three stages of stretching when rehabilitation from injury?

A

acute stage- up to 3 days after injury, no stretching
mid stage- 3 days to 2 weeks, heat therapy and gentle passive and static stretching
late stage- 2 weeks to 1 month, range of motion stretches, some PNF

Q

how does physiotherapy help with rehabilitation of injury?

A

-the joint or injured area is often mobilised, stretched or manipulated
-exercises often encourage to work the damaged muscle fibres
-adjusted posture and alignment to increase biomechanics efficiency to help reduce chance of further injury
