periodisation Flashcards
what is periodisation of training?
-dividing up training plans into blocks with different goals and time frames
what are the aims of periodisation?
-reaching physiological peak at correct time
-avoiding injury/ burnout
-setting realistic and achievable goals
what’s a macro-cycle?
the whole programme – long term training programme (one year/season or 2/4 year cycle)
what’s a meso-cycle?
the ‘mid-term’ training programme – usually between 4-6 weeks.
what’s a micro-cycle?

competitive phase
transition phase
what is the preparatory phase?
pre-season
usually focuses on fitness (general conditioning) and then more sport specific training
what is the competitive phase?
where athletes aim to maintain fitness, avoid injury and focus on tactics and strategies
-training load and frequency may reduce and adequate rest days
-likely to include tapering
what is the transition phase?
tends to include active rest, recuperation and treatment for injuries
may be some low intensity aerobic work which increases as preparation phase approaches
how far in advance should you taper?
2-3 weeks
what is tapering?
