what are intrinsic risk factors for injuries?
physical make up
posture
inadequate range of movement in all joints
inadequate diet
lack of recovery time
strength imbalances
what are extrinsic risk factors for injuries?
improper technique
incorrect clothing/ footwear
rapid overload in training
overuse/ inadequate variation in training
inadequate warm up and cool down
how could we reduce extrinsic risk factors?
wearing correct equipment- protective clothing that fits within the regulations of the sport and fits correctly with no defects
provide the correct shock absorber needed for the sport
what does SALTAPS stand for and what is it?
response to an injury
SEE- acknowledge that an injury has occurred and stop game to ensure no further injury
ASK- ask them about the nature and location of the injury
LOOK- look for sign of injury on area they said
TOUCH- palpate the injury to assess the level of pain
ACTIVE- can they move the injured area unaided
PASSIVE- if active area is unsuccessful try moving the area through full range of motion
STRENGTH- assess strength with resistance or bearing weight
how would you respond to acute soft tissue injuries?
PRICE
PROTECT- removing player from site or protecting injury
REST- for at least 2-3 days to allow healing to take place
ICE- for 15mins every 2 hours to reduce swelling
ELEVATE- above the heart to further reduce swelling
how would you respond to concussions?
RECOGNISE- the nature and severity of the concussion by performing simple visual tests
REMOVE- from the pitch to avoid further injury
REFER- to a trained medical professional
REST- an appropriate time away is advised to allow full recovery
RECOVER- player should be regally assessed to monitor speed and effectiveness of recovery
RETURN- a player should follow a graduated return to play protocol.
