acute and chronic injuries Flashcards
when do acute injuries occur and how do they happen?
occur at a specific movement in time, caused by a sudden traumatic event
commonly between two players or a body part against a hard object
can be caused by poor technique
when do chronic injuries occur and how do they happen?
occur over a period of time after repeated or continuous stress.
commonly associated with overuse or excessive training regimes with insufficient recovery times
caused by sudden increases of intensity and frequency of training, poor technique, inadequate equipment, poor flexibility, inadequate warm up/ cool down
what are hard tissue injuries and what can they cause?
involves damage to bone or cartilage
usually involves fractures or dislocations
can lead to internal bleeding, joint instability and difficulty with movement
what are soft tissue injuries?
muscle strains or tears, sprained ligaments or inflamed tendons
normally result in inflammation, bruising and lack of mobility
need immediate attention to reduce recovery time
what are shin splints and how are they caused?
often as a result of overuse and occurs in the tibias anterior and posterior
in most cases, the tendon of these muscles and the periosteum become inflamed causing pain
mostly in long distance runners, dancers and footballers

whats a concussion?
a blow to the head that forces the brain to accelerate towards the rough inner lining of skull
what are the three grades of concussion and what are they decided by?
1- mild (symptoms last for less then 15 mins and no loss of consciousness)
2- moderate
3- servere
dependant on loss of consciousness, amnesia, loss of equilibrium
