projectile motion Flashcards
how does top spin effect a ball in flight?
Top spin causes ball to dip/ comes down more quickly/ shorter flight path
how does back spin effect a ball in flight?
Back spin causes ball to float/ travel further/ longer flight path
how does side spin effect a ball in flight?
Side spin causes ball to swerve/ bend/ deviate to left or right/ hook/ slice
what’s the optimum angle of release when you want to reach a height the same as release height?
45 degrees
what happens to the flight path if the resultant force is closer to the air resistance force?
the flight path isn’t parabolic/ symmetrical
shortened flight path
what happens to the flight path if the resultant force is closer to the weight force?
the flight path is parabolic/ symmetrical
explain why the flight path of a shot put is symmetrical
-the resultant force is closer to the weight force
-so weight force is dominant
-so flight path is symmetrical
what is the Bernoulli principle?
the theory that higher velocity air flow creates lower pressure resulting in a subsequent lift force
what is a lift force?
an additional force created by pressure differences on opposing surfaces which can increase flight time and horizontal distance of a projectile
what is an aerofoil?
a shape with a curved upper surface and flat underneath surface
creates a lift force
whats the Magnus effect?
the change in air velocity/ pressure that occurs on different surfaces on an object as a result of it spinning which causes the object to deviate from its flight path
how does top spin effect bounce of the ball?
accelerates out of the bounce at a flatter angle, goes lower
how does back spin effect bounce of the ball?
decelerates out of the bounce, goes higher
advantages of using topspin
harder for opponent to return the ball
disadvantages of topspin
gives you less recovery time as it gets their quicker
is predictable
