What is the second conversion in the Catechism?
The ongoing work of daily Christian life in which the baptized person responds to the call of Christ to be holy. The universal call to holiness is the vocation of all Christians

What was public penance?
It was the method of Reconciliation in the early Church. The sin would be presented to the community and sin would be confessed in front of gathered community. Penances were quite severe
What were the benefits and problems with public penance?
It was unlikely for the person to sin again, but if one sinned again he would be permanently excluded from the Church and many waited for Baptism to be forgiven of sins before their death. Gamble because of unexpected death
Private penance?
It was developed by St. Patrick allowing for confession to be performed privately and can receive it again. Penance was still harsh
What are indulgences?
They were a way to lessen the punishment of a prescribed penance. For example, By doing this you do not need to fast for that long.
Indulgences are said to be
Plenary when they remove all of the temporal punishment due to sin. To gain one, one must be detached from ALL sins.
However, most indulgences are
Partial, removing part of the temporal punishment due to sin

An offense against reason, truth, and right conscience, a failure in genuine love of God and neighbor, a word, act or desire against moral law, an offense against God

Venial sins do not completely break our relationship with God. Still affect our relationship
What is a mortal sin?
A deliberate act in a serious manner which is so contrary our relationship with him

Grave or serious manner, full knowledge, complete consent

Absolute secrecy regarding one’s sins. A priest is subject to excommunication should this seal be broken
