Baptism
The first of the seven Sacraments, as it gives way to the others. First and chief Sacrament of forgiveness because the baptized person receives the remission of both personal and Original Sin. It incorporates the person into the Church, the Body of Christ
Baptism of Blood
One who suffers death for the sake of the Faith, without having been baptized
Baptism of Desire
For those who strive to serve God but die before having the chance to receive baptism. Will assure salvation
Catechumen
From the Greek word- “one being instructed.” The new person is being instructed in the Christian faith before baptism
Catechumenate
The instruction and formation of catechumens.
Communion of Saints
The unity in Christ of all those redeemed, those on Earth and those who have died, especially the unity of faith and charity in the Eucharist
Concupiscence
Human appetites of desires remain disordered due to temporal consequences of original sin
Conditional baptism
Administered when there is doubt that Baptism was validly conferred and is done so “conditionally”
Didache
It summarizes morality as a choice between the path of life and the path of death, liturgical practices, and disciplinary norms
Domestic Church
An ancient expression for the Christian family. The family lives out and manifests the communal and familial nature of the Church as the family of God
Easter Vigil
The celebration that takes place after Sundown before Easter Sunday. The wonders of salvation are celebrated.
Enlightenment
Another name for Baptism. The person that has been baptized has been enlightened, becoming a son or daughter of light.
Ephphatha
It is the prayer said over the mouth and ears of a newly baptized infant asking that his ears be opened to God’s word and his mouth sing God’s grace
Ex opere operato
It refers to the fact that the efficiency of a sacrament relies on the sacramental rite itself, not the worthiness of the minister or ther person receiving it
Exorcism
The public and authoritative act of the Church to protect a person, place, or object, from the power of the Devil into the name of Christ
Godparent
The sponsor of one who is baptized. A godparent assumes the responsibility to assist the newly baptized child or adult in the practice of the Christian faith
Immersion
A method of baptizing whereby the whole person is submerged in water
Justification
Being made righteous with God. It is a free and undeserved gift of God through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ
Moral Evil
Evil consequences or suffering that is a direct effect of sinful behavior
Prefigure
An event or person in Scripture that points toward a later event or person
Profession of Faith
A synthesis or summary of the Faith professed by Christians. The most common are the Nicene and the Apostle’s creed
Sacramental Character
An indelible mark imprinted on the soul by Baptism, Conformation, and Holy Orders that gives Christians a greater share in the priesthood in Christ
Sponsor
A baptized, confirmed and practicing Catholic who presents a child or adult in Baptism or Confirmation. This person helps the one with religious instruction
Trinitarian Formula
Part of the form in Baptism in which the one is submerged in water and the priest says “I baptize in you in the name of
Vocation
The particular plan or calling that god has for each individual in this life and hereafter
Actual Sin
A thought, word, deed, or omission, contrary to God’s law. It requires that human knows it is a wrongdoing, awareness of malice, and consent of the will
