Receptors Flashcards
Pain receptors
-Located in the mucuous membranes
-Stimulated to tissue damage
-Pain response is consistently felt until a response acts to change it
Chemoreceptors
-Stimulated by particular chemicals
-Located in sense organs and sensitive to odours and tastes respectively
-Present internally to control composition of body fluids
-Important chemoreceptors exist in blood vessels to ensure the pH of the blood is within certain limits by measuring carbon dioxide and oxygen levels.
Osmoreceptors
Located in the hypothalamus
-Respond to changes in concentrations of substances in blood plasma determined by osmotic pressure
-Maintains body water content within narrow limits.
Thermoreceptors
-Most located in the skin responding to external temperature changes.
-Others located in hypothalamus which keep track of blood temperature and hence control core body temperature.
-Respond to changes in temperature.
Specialised to exclusively respond to hot or cold.
Touch Receptors
-Different types located in different layers of the skin as well as the base of hair follicles.
-Types sensitive to very light touches are present in sensitive areas of skin, eg lips, fingertips, eyelids, external genital organs.
-Types sensitive to light touch bending hair, nerve endings at the base of hair follicles
-Types sensitive to pressure and vibrations, located deep in skin.
