Page 10, 11- Divisions of the PNS Flashcards
Afferent
Composed of fibres taking nervous impulses from sensory tissues to the central nervous system.
Efferent
Composed of fibres that take the impulses from the CNS to the effectors. The efferent division can be further divided into the:
autonomic and systemic nervous system
Somatic System
Fibres taking messages from the CNS to the skeletal muscles
Autonomic System
Responsible for control of the body’s internal environment and is involved in many mechanisms keeping internal environment constant.
Usually operates without conscious control.
Regulated by group of nerve cells in Medulla Oblongata, Hypothalamus and Cerebral Cortex.
Sympathetic
Produce responses preparing body for strenuous physical activity. Fight-or-flight response. Nerve endings release noradrenaline.
Parasympathetic
Generally produces responses that maintain body during relatively quiet conditions. Nerve endings release acetylcholine
What can the autonomic system be further divided into?
Again, the autonomic division can be divided into the Sympathetic and Parasympathetic systems.
