Page 8,9- Structures protecting the CNS Flashcards
Bone
Outermost protection for brain and spinal cord
Brain is contained within the cranium while the spinal cord is protected by the vertebrae.
What are the Meninges
Three membranous structures that exist between the CNS and bone surrounding it.
Meninges Outer Layer
Tough and fibrous, sticks closely to the inside of the cranium.
Meninges Middle Layer
Mesh-like layer which acts to cushion the CNS.
Meninges Inner Layer
A thin and delicate layer composed of many blood vessels and fitting closely to the brain and spinal cord.
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
andwhat it occupies
A clear fluid containing organic molecules and some salts produced from blood.
occupies the space between the inner and middle meningeal layers, cavities within the brain tissues and the central canal of the spinal cord.
Cerebrospinal fluid main functions
-Shock absorbance
-Suspension of the brain within its cavity thereby supporting it.
-Transporting nutrients from the blood to the CNS, and removing waste from the CNS as it returns to the bloodstream.
