Rate Flashcards
What is rate?
Rate is a way of comparing tow or more quantities with different units.
How do we simplify rate?
We need to make the rate in relation to one. We do this by dividing the smaller value by itself. We then divide the larger number by the original smaller number.
What is important to remember about rate?
Write your units of measurement
What you do to the one side you do to the other
Give an example of simplifying rate. A car drives at a speed of 48km/4hrs.
First we need to divide the smaller number by itself to get 1. 4/4=1 next we need to divide the other number by the smaller number as well. 48/4=12
So the rate is 12km/1hr
How do we divide values into rate?
First we need to simplify the rate. Then we need to multiply the unit that we are given by whichever unit in the rate is the same.
Give an example of dividing into rate. If a car travels at 20km/4hrs, how far will it travel in 6hrs?
The first step is to simplify. 4/4=1 20/4=5 The new rate is 5km/1hr If we have 6hrs, multiply the 1hr by 6 Multiply the 5km by 6 The divided rate is 30km/6hrs
