Integers Flashcards
What are negative numbers?
Negative numbers are the values below 0. We show that they are negatives with a -. For example, -1; -2; -3; -4; -5; -6; -7; -8; -9…
How do we order integers?
No matter how large the digits are, a negative will always be less than a positive. Even if we compare -1470 to 2, 2 will be the larger number because it is a positive. In the same way, negatives that are closer to 0 are larger than those closer to negative infinity. If we compare -1470 to -2, 2 is larger because it is closer to 0.
What happens when we add positive integers?
A positive integer plus a positive integer will always be a larger positive integer, unless the integer is 0, in which case the positive integer will stay the same. The answer will always be positive.
What happens when we add negative integers?
A negative integer plus a negative integer, will always be a smaller negative integer. It will always be a negative answer.
What happens when we add negative and positive integers together?
Adding a positive integer to a negative integer will be smaller than the positive integer, but larger than the negative integer. The answer can be either negative or positive, depending on the value of the integer.
What happens when we multiply positive integers?
When we multiply positive integers, the result will always be larger than the original, except when we multiply by 1 or 0, as these have special properties. The answer will always be positive.
What happens when we multiply negative integers?
The negative integers cancel each other out. In other words, when we multiply negative integers, they become positive. Therefore, the product of two negative numbers will always be positive.
What happens when we multiply a negative and a positive integer together?
When we multiply positive and negative numbers together, we get a negative.
What are integers?
Integers are whole numbers as well as negative numbers.
What happens when we divide positive integers?
When we divide positive integers, the result will always be smaller than the original. The answer will always be positive.
What happens when we divide negative integers?
The negative integers cancel each other out. In other words, when we divide negative integers, they become positive. Therefore, the quotient of two negative numbers will always be positive.
What happens when we divide negative and positive integers?
When we divide positive and negative numbers together, we get a negative.
