Number Patterns Flashcards
How do you solve number patterns?
You consider what is happening every time the next value of the pattern is found.
How are number patterns formed?
According to a specific rule.
What kinds of number patterns are there?
Ones where there is a constant difference
Ones where there is a constant number that is added to the difference (quadratic patterns)
And ones where there is a constant ratio
What happens in number patterns that have a constant differences?
Where you add or subtract a constant number to the previous term to get the next term.
For example 2;4;6;8
What happens in a pattern where there is a constant ratio?
You multiply or divide a constant number to get to the next term.
For example, 2;4;8;16
What happens in a quadratic pattern?
A pattern where there is a constant second difference.
For example, 1;4;9;16
What are the numbers of a sequence called?
They are called the terms of the sequence.
What does n represent in number patterns?
It represents the position in the sequence.
What does T represent in the sequence?
It represents the term.
How do you make an equation for your pattern?
Put your difference as the coefficient of n, then try out your rule. It doesn’t work for quadratic patterns.
