- Definition of potentially rabid animal
Animal
- Showing the signs of rabies (the disease)
- OR symptomless BUT has been bitten by a rabid or potentially rabid animal
- AND a wild mammal which behaves strangely or attacks humans
- Definition of potentially rabies-infected animal
Animal that:
- Has or may have been in contact with a rabid or potentially rabid animal
Within the last 90 days
- Definition of rabies risky animal
- Any mammal that has attacked or bitten humans
- OR any dog that has not received anti-rabies vaccination in accordance with the
regulations

- Animal in which unquestionable laboratory tests have confirmed rabies
- Official measures with potentially rabid animals
Potentially rabid domestic animals or susceptible animals kept in captivity:
- Killed
- OR monitored for 90 days, isolated in adequate conditions
if signs → inspected daily
if no signs → inspected weekly
Potentially rabid stray or wild animals
- Killed
- AND official vet informed without delay
- Official measures with potentially rabies-infected animals
- Put under official monitoring for 90 days
Carnivores: separated at the place of their keeping or at an official place
Non-carnivores: tied and separated - Inspected every 3 weeks
- Official measures with potentially rabies risky animals
For rabies-risky dogs
- Monitor for 14 days*
- AND microchip, if not already microchipped
- AND anti-rabies vaccination at the end of monitoring, if no valid vaccine
For all rabies-risky animals
- *Monitor for 14 days
Car: at keeper’s place or adequate site, non-car: at keeping place, separated
If any signs → inspected daily until full recovery
If no signs → inspected weekly
If typical rabies signs → killed immediately and samples sent to lab
- Prohibited slaughter, treatment or treatment attempt
- Rules of preventive vaccination of dogs against rabies
- Obligatory vaccination of all dogs above 3 mo
Within 30 days after reaching 3 months old (monovalent)
Within 6 months after 1st vaccination (monovalent)
Yearly afterwards
- Public health measures in case of rabies
- An official vet
confirming rabies or potential rabies
aware that a rabid or potentially rabid or potentially infected animal
has bitten (attacked) any person
→ shall notify the competent regional institution of medial authority - A physician
caring for any wound caused by a dog, cat or wild animals
→ shall notify in writing the official veterinary authority - The autopsy or head removal of a rabid or potentially rabid animal
→ shall be performed by an official vet, in protective clothes, for lab sampling only
