Sample: 1g of unruptured OR freshly ruptured vesicle
Transported ASAP, to an authorized laboratory, in:
a cold (4°C) buffered transport medium, pH 7.2-7.4
- If not possible (e.g no vesicle, young animal):
Saliva AND Blood
AND/OR esophageal-pharyngeal fluid taken with probang cup
- From dead animals
Myocardial tissue OR blood but vesicles preferred if present

6. Use of vaccination in case of confirmation of FMD

Emergency vaccination: Protective vaccination in a regionalized vaccination zone
+ second surveillance zone > 10km radius, Or
Suppressive vaccination within the protection zone, in identified holdings
As part of stamping out: vaccinate, kill, destroy
+ Epi inquiry, movement restriction (meat, milk, animals), clinical & serologicalsurvey
- No trade of vaccinated animals, traceability should ensure it
Vaccinated from tested herd may be moved within the Member State

7. Rules of recovery of FMD free status if no vaccination has been used

If NO vaccination:
- Measures have been effective and may be lifted
- AND at least 3 months waiting period since last outbreak

Kill all susceptible animals
- Animals that can act as mechanical vector may be killed (hair, skin), e.g horse
Either disinfect the animals or kill them, depending on risk
- Dispose carcasses without delay
- Destroy or heat treat all products of animal origin present on the holding
- Cleaning and disinfection of buildings, vehicles
- Epi inquiry
- 21 days after cleaning for restocking

- General measures
- No movement of susceptible animals
▪ Except were emergency slaughtered in slaughterhouse outside zone
- No market, fair, shows with susceptible animals

- Clinical and serological testing
- For at least 14 days after last killing/disposal of carcass
