Ridicule (noun, verb)
To make fun/laugh at someone in a mean way
I had many people ridicule me back in school, they saw me as an easy target
Relentless (adj)
Continuing in an intense or extreme way
This guy is relentless, he just won’t stop escaping no matter what we do
Recession (noun)
A widespread decline in economic activity
The UK is currently in a recession as it suffers with many problems
Redundant (adj)
Not useful/no longer needed
Nokia phones are pretty much redundant now compared to today’s technology
Radical (adj)
Very different/extremist from the usual, especially by change
Gas prices have had such radical changes it makes prices from a decade ago look so cheap
Revere (verb)
To feel deep respect and admiration for something
The citizens revere on superheroes more than the police
Revolution (noun)
A change in organisation, usually political
These riots would cause a revolution in hopes for a better system
Receptive (adj)
Open to accept new ideas/changes
People aren’t as receptive, they don’t like change
Rampant (adj)
Something happening that is wild/out of control - rampage
Some wild animals are rampant in certain parts of the world
Reside (verb)
To live somewhere known as your own property
One day when I am stable enough, I want to reside somewhere peaceful
Reprieve (verb)
To stop or delay something, usually a punishment/consequence
His ban was reprieved as they felt empathetic about it
Repent (verb)
To feel regret/guilt over something that was wrong
I hope you repent for your horrible actions!
Recite (verb)
To say out loud from memory/in a formal way
I personally hate to recite everything during presenting so I just read off the screen
Reductive (adj)
To describe or deal with something complex in a simple or overly simple way
You’re making the story reductive by leaving out important parts and shortening it down
Resuscitate (verb)
To awaken/bring back someone from unconsciousness or death
The doctor tried to resuscitate him after he had passed out
Renovate (verb)
Restoring something to good repair/state, often a building
The old factory had been renovated into new and modern houses
Ravenous (adj)
Extremely hungry/famished
I felt ravenous after exploring all day
Regulation (noun)
An official rule made by an authority for the act of control
The school must comply with the regulations
Repercussion (noun)
Something that happens because of another action
You could stop turning up to work, but the repercussion would be that you lose your job
Ravishing (adj)
Very beautiful/delightful
These bluebell flowers look ravishing!
Reclusive (adj)
Living alone/independently by avoiding others
You’re becoming more reclusive by moving further away and distancing yourself
Resilient (adj)
Being able to withstand/recover from difficulties and keep moving forward
These shoes aren’t very resilient for climbing mountains, hiking boots would be better
Revoke (verb)
To take back, withdraw or cancel something
The theme park was revoked due to thunderstorms
Rational (adj)
Having reason or understanding by logic
If you aren’t rational about the situation then people won’t be able to agree with you
Reprimand (noun, verb)
A strong expression of disapproval
The referee reprimanded his team for cheating
Rehash (noun, verb)
To reuse something old or in the past without any change/improvement
This game is just a rehash of the previous one
Ruminate (verb)
To think deeply/carefully about something for a long period of time
He ruminated for months if he should end their friendship or not
Recital (noun)
A performance of a small group of people or a soloist
You going to the group’s recital tonight?
Residual (noun, adj)
Remaining after the greater part/quantity has gone
She’s resting after the residual damage from the incident
Repress (verb)
To subdue/keep under control by force
The government represses society by making sure everyone follows the law
