Class characteristic handwriting
Based on how children are taught to write
Individual characteristic handwriting
Individual perception, dexterity, errors made during the learning process, and the incorporation of specific features of the writing style
Natural variation
The usual and normal deviations that occur within repeated specimens of a person’s handwriting
Handwriting comparison
Involves comparing the questioned document with a comparable sample from a suspect
Comparison sample (Exemplars)
Obtained by collection or request. Original documents compare features such as pen pressure can lead to a positive identification, strong probability, weak probability, or neither eliminate, or no evidence to indicate.
Collected specimens
Naturally written, include broad range of natural variation. May be duplicated by samples from the time the questioned document was written. Disadvantages: difficult to prove who wrote it if it was not witnessed.
Requested specimens
Advantages: authorship is not in dispute, questioned documents can be reproduced, quality and style of writing can be controlled.
Disadvantages: May have attempts to disguise the handwriting or the writing may not be natural
Canada letter
Set letter altered for each collection of information, Includes words and word combinations that must be changed to ensure the suspect writes everything that is in the questioned document

Most disguise are simple.

Printing and typing from machine can also create question documents
Class characteristics Machines
Something unique that occurred during manufacture, use, and misuse
Innate characteristics
Common to a group but does not apply to all objects in the group. Photocopies of a document can be examined to determine the make and model of the machine used to produce the copy
Altered documents
Torn pieces of paper, foil, plastic can be physically matched to an original
Obliteration
Blotting out or smearing over of writing to make the original unreadable
