Forensic Biology Flashcards
Buccal swabs
Taken from the cheek to retrieve DNA
Biology analytical
DNA is extracted, quantified, and amplified
Biology reporting
DNA profiling software determines the probability of someone having the same genetic profile in question and stats interpretation of any matching sample is performed
Follicular tag
Translucent piece of tissue surround the hair’s shaft to its root. Contains DNA and the shaft contains mitochondrial DNA
Hair comparison
Suspect hair is compared to a known hair
Anagen
Hair actively growing and root is attached to the foolicle
Catagen
Hair growth slows and the root shape changes as the root bulb shrinks and begins to be pushed out of the follicle
Telogen
Root changes shape again and the hair is shed. Does not contain the follicular tag when naturally shed
Cuticle
Outside covering of hair that retains its structure
Cortex
Mid section of hair that contains pigment
Medulla
Cells running through a central canal in the hair. Most humans have no medulla in their head hair, except for mongoloid ancestry
Serology
Forensic analysis of blood
Luminol
Sensitive test that can presumptively detect bloodstains diluted to as little as 1 in 100,000.
Fast blue
Tests for enzymes in semen, not sperm
Forensic nursing
Forensic nurse who has undergone additional training in the forensic aspects of health care
