Forensic Toxicology
Deals with the detection of drugs or poison’s and interpreting the findings in terms of its physiological and behavioral effects.
Clandestine labs

Analytical phase
selecting appropriate specimens for analysis and identifying drug based on how much of it remains and the presence of known metabolites
Presumptive tests
Quick/Sensitive but not specific. Can indicate what class of drugs
Confirmatory tests
Sensitive and specific to a single drug
Interpretative phase
Quantitative and qualitative determinations. Answers questions such as when the last dose was taken, whether the dose was acute or chronic, how the dose was taken, the amount taken, which is determined from the quantities of metabolites present and what symptoms that drug would likely produce in that amount
Narcotics
Depress vital body functions such as opiates
Hallucinogens
Induce changes in mood, thoughts, and perceptions such as marijuana
Depressants
Depress the functions of the central nervous system, such as alcohol and barbiturates (CNS depressant)
Stimulants
Increase alertness or activity like amphetamines and cocaine; club drugs; and anabolic steroids
