Forensic Identification Section
Specialized police officers who collect evidence from the scene. Not responsible for the actual investigation
Serious Crime Section
Officers who pursue the actual investigation. Receive information from other branches of the investigation, including ident and other specialists to piece the investigation
Coroner’s service
Normally attends the scene because coroner has jurisdiction over the body
Four legal and scientific requirements when gathering evidence
- ID each piece of evidence
- Describe where each piece was found
- Prove continuity of evidence form crime scene to court
- Describe changes in the evidence that may occur between collection and court
Zone of contamination
A part that allows those to enter the crime scene
Chain of custody
The officer must be aware of exactly where the evidence is at any given time and what has been done to it.
