Bertillonage
Method of anthropomorphic identification was created to use 14 physical characteristics scored with 5 rankings. System is flaw that the probability of two people having all the same ranks is too rare
Taphonomy processes
Anything that happens to the body postmortem and include decomposition and interaction with the environment
Normative Standards
Reference of data that are based on samples of normal individuals of a known age or height or population
Tentative Identifcation
When a police have an idea on who the decedent might be. A possible identification based on items found
Positive Identification
Confirms the tentative identification and proves the remains are those of a specific person. Determined through visual identification, fingerprints, dental records, medical records, DNA, and video superimposition. Therefore, very dependent on antemortem records
Fingerprints (Three fundamentals)
- An individual characteristic
- Remain unchanged throughout life
- General ridge pattern that allows them to be classified into 3 categories (Loops, Whorls, and arches)
