Quantitative chemistry-paper 1 Flashcards
Define the term reactant
The elements and compounds that are reacting.
Define the term product
The elements and compounds produced from chemical reactions.
What is meant by conservation of mass?
The total mass of the products formed is equal to the total mass of the reactants.
What is meant by relative atomic mass?
The ratio of the average mass of the atoms of a chemical element in a given sample to the 1 over 12 if the mass of a carbon 12 atom.
What is meant by the relative formula mass?
The total of the relative atomic masses added up in the ratio shown in the chemical formula of a substance.
What is a mole?
A mole is the amount of substance in the relative atomic or formula mass of a substance in grams.
Define limiting reagant
The reactant that determines the amount of product is formed.
Define yield
The amount of product obtained in a chemical reaction.
What is meant by atom economy?
A measure of the amount of the starting materials end up as useful products.
How do you calculate the relative atomic mass?
You add up all of the relative atomic masses in the formula.
What is meant by the theoretical yield?
It is the maximum possible mass of a product that can be made in a chemical reaction.
What is the equation for the amount of product made in a chemical reaction (percentage yield)
percentage yield=mass of product actually made divided by maximum theoretical mass of the product and the times by 100.
What is the equation for atom economy?
total mr of the desired product divided by the total mr of all reactants times 100.
