Energy changes-Chemistry paper 1 Flashcards
Define ion
A charged atom, positive/negative.
What is meant by reactivity?
How reactive a metal is,The reactivity of the metals is arranged in a list called the reactivity series.
What is meant by oxidation?
The loss of electrons from an atom.
What is meant by reduction?
The transfer of electrons to an atom(gain)
Define ore
A rock containing minerals e.g iron oxide.
What is meant by neutralisation?
Where hydrogen atoms react whith hydroxide ions to form water.( acids + alkalines)
What is meant by salt and how is it formed?
Salt is an ionic compound and is formed during neutralisation reactions.
What is meant by aqueous?
Dissolved in water
What is meant by acidity?
The concentration of H+ ions in a solution.
What is meant by Alkalinity?
The concentraion of OH- ions in a solution
What is meant by the process ionisation?
How completely an acid ionises in solution i.e the concentration of H+ ions.
What is meant by concentration?
The number of acid or alkali molecules dissolved in a given volume of water.
What is a displacement reaction?
This is where a more reative metal can displace another metal from its compound.
What are the differences between strong and weak acids(what happens in water)
1 strong acids completely ionise in solution.
2.weak acids do not completely ionise in solution.
What is the Ph scale and how is it constructed?
The PH scale goes from 0-14 and measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution, Ph 7 is neutral alkalis have a PH of greater than 7 and acids have a PH of less than 7.
