Bonding Structure and the properties of matter-Chemistry paper 1 Flashcards
What is meant by an ionic bond?
Strong electrostatic force of attraction between oppositely charged ions.
What is meant by an electrostatic force?
A strong force of attraction between particles of opposite charge.
What is meant by a giant ionic lattice?
A 3d structure of strong electrostatic forces acting in all directions between oppositely charged ions.
Define covalent bond
A strong bond in which atoms share their outer shell electrons.
Define intermollecular force
A weak force of attraction between small molecules.
What is meant by a giant covalent structure?
A structure which contains a lot of atoms that are all covalently bonded with one another
What is meant by a metallic bond?
A latice structure of closely packed metal ions surrounded by delocolised electrons.
Define alloy
A mixture of 2 or more elements, must contain at least one metal.
What is meant by delocolised electrons?
Electrons that are not associated to any particular bond/atom.
Define polymer
A polymer is a largecovalent molecule that is formed from many smaller molecules
Define allotrope
Different forms of the same element
What is meant by the term nanoparticle?
A structure that ranges from 1-100 nanometers in size and only contains a few hundred atoms.
What are the properties of diamond?
1.Very hard
2. High melting point
3.Doesnt conduct electricity.
What is the structure of diamond?
1.Giant covalent structure
2.4 covalent bonds per carbon a large amount of energy is required to break these bonds.
What are the properties of graphite?
1.soft
2.conducts electricity
