Quantitative and Qualitative Data Flashcards
What is quantitative data?
Scientific data which is numerical
How is quantitative data gathered?
Objectively through polls, questionnaires, surveys etc.
How is quantitative data analysed?
Mathematically to form statistics (e.g. standard deviation)
Give 3 strengths of quantitative data
Form statistics
Allow comparisons to be made
Can be conducted more quickly
Give 2 weaknesses of quantitative data
Lack depth and detail
Participants may choose an answer they don’t agree with (due to lack of choice)
How is qualitative data gathered?
Subjectively through interviews, open questions etc.
How is qualitative data analysed?
Thematic analysis, content analysis etc.
Give 2 strengths of qualitative data
Rich in depth and detail
Can be converted in quantitative data (form statistics)
Give 2 weaknesses of qualitative data
Interpretation of data (subjective)
Can be time consuming to analyse
What is nominal data?
Data in discrete categories which don’t overlap
What is ordinal data?
Data portrayed as a scale
What is interval data?
Numerical data where the difference between points is standardised and meaningful
