When did Burger’s study occur?

What was the aim of Burger?
To replicate Milgram’s study and test whether those levels of obedience still exist in today’s society
What was the procedure to Burger?
Same procedure as Milgram except:
-29 men and 41 women aged 20-81 volunteered in the experiment via an advert (were paid $50)
- Teacher receives 15V test shock
- Shocks rise in 15V intervals
- At 75V the learner begins to make sounds of pain
- At 150V the learner complains about chest pains and cries he wants to stop
- If the teacher continues to 165V the experiment is stopped
What were the results of the experiment?
- 70% of participants were prepared to to shock past 150V
- Little difference between men and women (women very slightly less obedient)
- Empathy in participants didn’t affect results
What did Burger do to ensure that participants would not be harmed?
Did a screening process to not let anybody who was at risk of psychological harm take part and ruled out anybody who had a chance of knowing about Milgram’s experiment
Is Burger generalisable?
- Men and women were used (age range of 20-81)
- Ethnocentric and a volunteer sample (demand characteristics)
Is Burger reliable?
-Same confederate, voltage etc. used
Is Burger applicable?
Yes because it suggests why people are obedient and how to make disobedient people comply more
Is Burger valid?
-Highly controlled (high internal validity)
- Low in ecological validity
- Low in mundane realism
Is Burger ethical?
- Participants put under psychological stress
- Participants were deceived
- Debriefed at the end
- Those at risk were screened out
What happened in the model refusal condition?
A confederate of the same gender as the participant was placed next to the participant and had to shock the learner. They voiced their reluctance and left, leaving the experimenter to prompt the participant to carry on
What were the results of the model refusal condition?
37% stopped at 150V
63% were prepared to go past 150V
