Presentation of pyloric stenosis?

A

Projectile vomiting in otherwise healthy child (non-bile stained)

  • Typically occurring after each meal
  • Increased frequency and severity as child grows
  • Constant hunger
  • Wt loss/poor weight gain

What is a consequence of pyloric stenosis?

A

Hypochloraemic metabolic alkalosis with low plasma potassium
(from vomiting acid stomach contents)

-Test feed:
Pyloric mass or ‘olive’ palpable in RUQ
-US
-Barium meal

A
  • IV fluid for resuscitation and correct electrolytes

- Pyloromyotomy (muscle but not mucosa of pylorus is cut)
