What is Hirschsprung’s disease physiologically?
A
- Absence of PS ganglion cells
- Resulting in narrow, contracted segment

What is Hirschsprung’s disease?
A
Congenital abnormality whereby there is improper innervation of the large intestine, extending from rectum, sometimes proximally into colon

When does Hirschsprung’s disease present?
A
Neonatal period

Clinical presentation of Hirschsprung’s disease?
A
- Failure to pass stool in first 48 hours of life
- Abdominal distension
- Bile-stained vomit
- Rectal examination: narrowed segment. On withdrawal of finger a gush of liquid stools and flatus

Later childhood presentation of Hirschsprung’s?
A
Triad of:
- Constipation
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal distension
