What are febrile convulsions?
Seizure in the presence of a temperature >38.5
When do febrile convulsions occur?
Typically occurs early in the course of a viral infection
What causes febrile convulsions?
Occur in response to a rapid rise in temperature: not to raised temperature alone
Management of febrile seizures?
- Parental education
- Control temperature
What is Cerebral palsy?
Movement disorder that results from non-progressive lesion of motor pathways
How do symptoms appear in cerebral palsy?
Symptoms appear gradually as child doesn’t develop along normal trends
Symptoms of cerebral palsy?
- Learning difficulties
- Epilepsy
- Squint
- Visual impairment of any kind
- Hearing impairment
- Speech and language disorder
- Behavioural disorders
What is hemiplegic cerebral palsy?
Arm and leg on one side affected q
What is paraplegic cerebral palsy?
Both legs
What is quadriplegic cerebral palsy?
All 4 limbs
What do specific symptoms depend on?
Where the lesion is (cerebellum, basal ganglia etc)
Autistic Triad?
- Communication
- Social interaction
- Flexibility of thought/interaction
Characteristics of autistic communication?
- Abstract language is difficult
- Odd intonation/pitch
- Avoids eye contact
- Lack of awareness of reciprocal nature of conversation
You are more likely to have cerebral palsy if?
- Premature
- Small
- Twin/multiple births
- Maternal hypo/hypertension
- Injury in womb or head injury in life
- Periventricular leukomalacia
- Congenital infection
- HIE
- Meningitis after birth
- Near drowning
Potential problems of CP?
- Gross motor delay
- Fine motor delay
- Speech/communication
- Sleep disturbance
- Pain
- High tone/low tone
- Low bone mineral density
- Salivation
- Nutrition
- Swallowing difficulties
