A

Violent Felony:
A
potential for serious bodily injury or death to victim was demonstrated by suspect.
- initiate pursuit if violent felony or DWI presenting an imminent danger
- immediate danger created to public is LESS THAN the potential danger to public should suspect remain at large

Conditions to consider when contemplating pursuing:
A
- lack of backup
- known suspects
- juveniles in pursued vehicle
- loss of reliable radio communications
- non-sworn personnel present
- adverse weather and road conditions
- heavy vehicle/pedestrian traffic
- unfamiliar with area
- suspect ignores solid red lights, or takes other steps to totally disregard safety of public would be grounds for termination
- SHALL NOT pursue suspects on wrong way on interstate, controlled highways, or divided roadways
- no more than 2 vehicles will become involved. Shadowing is prohibited.
- use of a tire deflating device (and roadblocks) must be authorized and cancelled by supervisor
- roadblocks clearly visible. Roadway SHALL NOT be completely blocked unless deadly force

- info on suspect vehicle/occupants
- reason for pusuit
- notify dispatch if leaving city limits

Field Supervisor Responsibilities During Pursuit:
A
- notify field commander
- insure radio channel is secured
- insure only required units involved
- verify only marked units are in pursuit
- SHALL proceed to termination point
- MUST authorize pursuit that leaves city limits
- approve or deny assistance to other agency’s pursuits
- can approve tire deflation even if pursuit does not meet our guidelines

-If continues outside of Springfield & suspect arrested
A
- warrant or citation = return to Springfield
- PC = take suspect to judge in county in which arrest is made
- it is ok to release suspect into other agency’s custody

Pursuit Report
A
- reason for pursuit
- weather conditions
- route taken, speeds, all traffic violations
- suspect vehicle description
- ID of all occupants of suspect vehicle
- final disposition of pursuit and charges
- any officer participating in pursuit WILL complete supplemental report
- routine pursuit reports kept for 3 years, injury or death pursuits kept 5 years
