Pulmonary vascular disease Flashcards
what is pulmonary vascular disease?
any condition that affects the blood vessels along the route between the heart and lungs,
blood travels from the heart, to the lungs, and back to the heart
what is pulmonary embolism?
it is a blockage of an artery in the lungs by a substance that has travelled from elsewhere in the body through the bloodstream
what does pulmonary embolism usually result from?
it usually results from a blood clot in the leg that travels to the lung
what is the basic understanding of what a pulmonary embolism is?
it is a blood clot that occurs in the lungs
what can a pulmonary embolism damage?
it can damage part of the lung due to restricted blood flow, decrease oxygen levels in the blood, and affect other organs as well
can large or multiple blood clots be fatal?
yes., the blockage can be life threatening
how is pulmonary embolism treated?
blood clots to the lungs are treated with blood thinners, anticoagulants
how is pulmonary vascular disease treated?
it is treated according to its cause
how is pulmonary arterial hypertension treated?
several medicines can lower blood pressure in the pulmonary arteries: ambrisentan
what is thrombosis?
it is local coagulation or clotting of the blood in a part of the circulatory system
what is deep-vein thrombosis? (deep venous thrombosis)
is thrombosis in a vein lying deep below the skin, especially in the leg, often precipitated by immobility during illness or long-distance travel
what is the single disease entity that deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism are manifestations of?
venous thromboemolism
what is pulmonary embolism?
it is a blockage of an artery in the lungs by a substance that has travelled from else where in the body through the bloodstream
what does pulmonary embolism usually result from?
pulmonary embolism usually results from a blood clot in the leg that travels to the lung
what is lung infarction?
death of one or more sections of lung tissue due to deprivation of an adequate blood supply
