What publications should be carried by all ships under UK law?
Official Logbook (MCA)
Code of Safe Working Practices (COSWP), Published by the MCA:
* The code contains essential health and safety information to guide on improving health and safety on board the ship.
* The following numbers are required to be carried:
o 5 crew or less - 1 copy.
o More than 5 crew but less than 20 - 4 copies.
o More than 20 crew - 6 plus.
International Code of Signals (IMO) – MUST BE PAPER FORMAT.
IMSAR Volume 3 – MUST BE IN PAPER FORMAT.
Mariners’ Handbook (UKHO).
Merchant Shipping Notices, Marine Guidance Notes, and Marine Information Notes (MCA).

What does the Admiralty Chart Catalogue (NP131) contain?
The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) publishes The Catalogue of Admiralty Charts and Other Hydrographic Publications (NP131) annually.
What do navigational charts contain?
Most merchant vessels carry UKHO charts. (Not only UK-registered vessels).
In some parts of the world, it may be a requirement to use local charts.
These charts are published on a sufficiently large scale to allow safe navigation in coastal waters of the UK and some Middle Eastern countries. They also publish sufficient charts to enable mariners to safely cross the oceans and reach their destination ports.
What does the mariners handbook contain?
A handbook that covers essential topics to help deck officers if needed, general areas covered in the handbook include:
o Navigation.
o Hazard to navigation.
o Publications and charts.
o Safety.
o Meteorology and oceanography.
What does Admiralty Notice to Mariners contain?
The UK Hydrographic Office issue weekly notices to update charts as well as the following publications:
o Sailing Directions.
o List of Lights and Fog Signals.
o List of Radio Signals.
What does the Admiralty Sailing Directions contain?
The UK Hydrographic Office issue weekly notices to update charts as well as the following publications:
o Sailing Directions.
o List of Lights and Fog Signals.
o List of Radio Signals.
What does the Ocean Passages of the world contain?
Published by the UKHO, this contains information on planning ocean passages.
Different routes are shown, depending on the ship type and time of year.
Factors are taken into account:
o Ocean currents.
o Climate – Expected weather.
o Tropical revolving storms or ice/ icebergs.
o Load line zones.
What does the Tidal Stream Atlas contain?
This contains the directions and strengths of tidal streams in a particular area.
Used in conjunction with tide tables to gain a more accurate prediction.
Information is given in hourly intervals from high water.
What does the Admiralty Tide Tables Contain?
Daily predictions for the times and heights of high water and low water at a selection of Standard Ports. These are covered in four volumes:
o Volume 1: UK and Ireland.
o Volume 2: Europe.
o Volume 3: Indian Ocean and southern China sea.
o Volume 4: Pacific Ocean.
Corrections to Standard Port information enable daily predictions for Secondary Ports (minor harbours) to be made.
A new edition of tide tables is required each year.
What does Admiralty list of Lights and Fog Signals contain?
This contains the latest known details of lights, light structures, light vessels, light floats, light buoys exhibiting lights at elevations exceeding 8m, and fog signals.
What does Admiralty list of Radio Signals contain?
Consists of eight volumes which include the following information:
o Maritime radio stations.
o Radio aids to Navigation, Satellite Navigation Systems, Legal Time, Radio Time Signals, and Electronic Position Fixing Systems.
o Maritime Safety Information Services.
o Meteorological Observation Stations.
o Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS).
o Pilot services, Vessel Traffic Services, and Port Operations.
What does Bridge Team Management Contain?
Published by the Nautical Institute.
This gives practical information such as passage planning, teamwork, and pilotage, to ensure the vessel arrives safely in port.
What does the Guide to Port Entry Contain?
This contains a reference to documentation, pilotage, tugs, and harbour facilities.
Used in conjunction with sailing directions
It is sorted in alphabetical order of port names, within four different volumes.
What does the nautical Almanac contain?
This book contains essential information for astronomical navigation.
A new edition is published yearly.
Includes the position of celestial bodies in relation to Greenwich and the celestial equator.
