Disturbance in the perception of reality, evidenced by hallucinations, delusions, or thought disorganization
psychosis
periods of high risk for agitation, aggression, impulsivity (suicide), and other forms of behavioral dysfunction

Active phase sx include: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, catatonic behavior, poverty of speech/affective flattening
schizophrenia
Duration of symptoms necessary for diagnosis of schizophrenia
Continuous signs of disturbance for at least 6 months and at least 1 month of “active-phase” symptoms
What are the positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
delusions and hallucinations

What is the significance of patients that predominantly have positive symptoms?
Normal brain structures on CT scans. Relatively good responses to treatments
What is the significance of patients that predominantly have negative symptoms?
Structural brain abnormalities on CT scans. Poor responses to treatments

paranoid type

disorganized type
Subtype of schizophrenia characterized by motoric immobility, excessive purposeless motor activity, extreme negativism or mutism, peculiarities of voluntary movement
Catatonic type
false belief based on incorrect inference about external reality that is not consistent with patient’s intelligence and cultural background. cannot be corrected by reasoning
