When the defenses fail and response involves somatic symptoms.
What is a neurotic reaction to stress?
Anxiety that is great, defenses are ineffective, and they develop neurotic symptoms.
What is a psychotic reaction to love?
Loss of control, leads to misperceptions of the environment.
What was Peplau’s concept of anxiety?
Psychophsyiological disorders occur at moderate to severe levels of stress.
What was Hans Selye’s stress theory?
Regardless of stressor, the response is a general adaptation syndrom. If it fails, it becomes a psychophsyiological illness.
What is the psychophysiological approach to illness?
More holistic- includes biological, psychological, and social determinants (bad thoughts=bad coping)

emotional stress can induce asthma, excessive dependence needs, if child is denied mothers comfort an attack may occur.

Type C personality- “nice guys” disease; negative emotions are repressed. Loss of hope.

Stress reduces immune system and can allow growth of mutated cells.

Type A personality- excessive competitive drive, never stops.
