denial
refusal to acknowledge existence of situation or feelings (someone with illness avoids appointments)
compensation
covering up a perceived weakness by emphasizing a trait that is more desire able (unable to do one thing so you do another)
displacement
transferring of feelings from one target to another considered less threatening (mad at one thing, can’t express it, take it out on someone less than you)
identification
attempt to adopt characteristics of individual one admires (imitating someone)
intellectualization
attempting to avoid expressing actual emotions associated with stressful situation by using logic and reasoning (avoid serious info by analyzing less important stuff)
introjection
internalization of beliefs and values of another (child develops ideas based on what parents say)
isolation
separation of thought or memory from feelings associated with it
(not expressing any emotion when talking about something serious)
projection
attributing feelings or impulses to oneself to another (feel strong attraction but says he is flirting with her)
rationalization
making excuses to justify feelings or behaviors (making an excuse to someone who doesn’t really need to hear why)
reaction formation
preventing unacceptable thoughts and behaviors by exaggerating the opposite (soldier fears combat volunteers)
regression
retreat to earlier stage of development (toddler wants to drink from a bottle)
repression
involuntarily blocking unpleasant feelings and experiences (accident victim can’t remember anything)
sublimation
good thing- rechanneling of drives or impulses into constrictive activities (something happens to someone so they form an awareness organization)
suppression
voluntarily blocking of unpleasant feelings and experiences (procrastinating with thoughts)
undoing
canceling out an experience one finds intolerable (trying to undo something)
