What is a crisis?
A state of psychological dis-equilibrium that occurs when a person faces a situation or important problem he can neither escape from or solve with his typical problem solving processes; a turning point in life that causes stress and anxiety to the point where he cannot cope

What are the goals of crisis intervention?
To stabilize the person quickly so they return to baseline functioning and prevent negative effects like mental illness and addictive behaviors
What is a developmental crisis?
Expected role changes; can be on time or delayed
What causes a delayed developmental crisis and an example?
Situations that trigger emotions related to unresolved conflicts. EX: Teen never rebels; manifests later on.
What is an expected crisis?
Midlife crisis- adult questions goals.
What is a situational crisis?
An event that upsets a person equilibrium with a sudden, unexpected onset
What is a traumatic crisis?
When a person personally experiences a traumatic event beyond their control (sexual assault)
What is an adventitious crisis?
An environmental disaster that disrupts the entire community
What is a sociocultural crisis?
Experiencing discriminatory practices based on age, race, gender, and sexual preference, or class. Also reject social norms.
What is an example of when a client who has a psychiatric diagnosis destabilizes?
When a schizo pt has a flare up due to medication
What is a crisis related to a new onset of psychopathology?
An individual who was not previously identified as having emotional problems becomes suicidal or psychotic.
Why do some people go into crisis while others do not?
Because of balancing factors.
What are some balancing factors that can prevent or cause a crisis?
Perception of the event, availability of support, and coping mechanisms.
What are the stages of a sudden onset of a crisis?
Impact- realizing the event
Recoil- experiencing overwhelming distress and struggle to cope
Post Traumatic period- distrupting n ormal function.
What is the first stage of a gradual onset crisis?
Individuals anxiety rises, usual problem solving mechanisms dont work.
What is the second stage of a gradual onset crisis?
Strategies to cope fail and stress escalates
What is the third stage of a gradual onset crisis?
Stress and anxiety continue to rise, and the individual reaches out to solve problem.
What is the fourth stage of a gradual onset crisis?
Coping mechanisms and support are insufficient and tension and anxiety becomes unbearable. Person feels helpless and hopeless.
What are some nursing assessments for crisis interventions?
Get accurate description of circumstances, determine the precipitating event, assess balance factors, assess sociocultural problems.
What are some nursing interventions for crisis intervention?
Use direct, matter of fact style, calmness, say you will help, listen for facts and feedings, clarify distorted thinking, focus on here and now.
What is a critical incident stress management program for?
Large scale crisis events.
What are some expected evaluations for crisis intervention?
Decreassed stress level, increased coping behaviors, client learns how to cope in the future.
How is a crisis prevented?
Preparation, teaching, coping strategies.
