What were the 4 aims of the Te Rau Hinengaro: New Zealand Mental Health Survey
- To better understand the prevalence of rates for major mental health disorders
- To understand barriers to health care use (and barriers)
- To understand disability associated with disorder
- To understand mental health needs in understudied populations e.g. Maori and Pacific People
What were the key methods of the survey
They asked 13,000 people (16+) and oversampled Maori and Pacific people to get better data on these communities. Looked at major disorders
What were the key findings of the survey
40% met the criteria for one disorder
60% of those had a serious disorder in the last 12 months
Maori and Pacific people had less access to services and that disorder rates were greater in Young peopl and people with lower SES

Migration history, Racism, Colonisation, Socio-economic status and age
