Psychology variables and methods Flashcards
what is an IV, DV and EV
IV - What you manipulate
DV- What you measure
EV- Something that could effect your results that you didn’t think about
What is Random Sampling
When people are chosen at random for an experiment.
What is Stratified Sampling
dividing a population into smaller groups
What is Convenience Sampling
Using a group convenient to the experiment.
What is an Independent Group and what are the limitations and advantages
Each participant is randomly allocated to one of two entirely separate conditions
Drop outs unlikely
Large number of P’s needed
What is a Repeated measures
The same participants are in both the experimental and control groups
Fewer Participants
Drop outs likely
What is Matched Participants
Each participant in one condition ‘matches’ a participant in the other condition(s) on one or more participant variables of relevance
The variable that the P’s are matched on will not influence results
Time consuming and Expensive.
